Christian leaders across Nigeria’s 19 northern states have called on their communities to become more actively involved in the nation’s political process.
They urged believers to not only cast votes but also seek elective office as the 2027 general elections approach.
The leaders made appeal during the maiden state conference of the Christian Northern Nigeria Political Forum (CNNPF), held on Sunday in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The event, themed “Christian Participation in Politics: A Panacea for the Empowerment of Women and Youth in Northern Nigeria,” gathered political and religious stakeholders from across the region.
In his keynote address on behalf of the CNNPF National President, Barau Mohammed, emphasized that political apathy among Northern Christians must give way to active engagement and civic responsibility.
Mohamed was represented at the forum by the association’s Executive Secretary, Illiya Ishaya.

“We are not asking for preferential treatment or for Christians to dominate. We are simply encouraging participation,” Ishaya said.
“Politics is not unholy. It is a vehicle through which leadership is delivered and our people must take it seriously if we want a better Nigeria.”
He noted that many Christians in the North tend to withdraw from politics, often citing disillusionment or religious concerns. “This mindset must change,” he added. “Democracy thrives when every group contributes. Christians must register, vote, and contest.”
He also commended the state coordinator of the forum, Promise Ezekiel, and his team for spearheading efforts to promote political education within Christian communities across Nasarawa.
Dignitaries from the Federal Capital Territory, Taraba, Katsina, and other northern states attended the gathering, which ended with renewed pledges to expand political literacy campaigns ahead of 2027.
