The National Environment Agency (NEA) has hailed students of Kairaba Senior Secondary School for winning an international environmental award with a song raising awareness about plastic waste.

In a ceremony held at the school in recognition of the award, NEA also presented certificates and cleansing materials to support ongoing environmental initiatives.

“The song went around the world because of the dedication these students have for their country,” said Mama Gloria, Kairaba’s principal. “They identified a problem and used their creativity to raise awareness. It is inspiring to see young people take responsibility for our environment.”

Sheikh Alkinki Sanyang, Senior Program Officer at NEA, highlighted the broader significance of the students’ work. “This achievement is not only for the school but for the nation,” he said. “It is a resource that can help communities understand the dangers of plastic waste and inspire responsible action.”

Hawa F. Jallow, from NEA’s Communication Department, explained the new school-level project being launched. “Through this initiative, NEA, in partnership with the West Africa Coastal Area Project, will implement environmental education and greening programs across 24 schools in the Kotu area,” she said. “We aim to instill knowledge and practical skills that encourage students to become ambassadors for environmental protection in their communities.”

Head girl Fatou Mbaye spoke on behalf of the students. “We faced challenges, but giving up was never an option,” she said. “This recognition motivates us to continue spreading awareness and showing that young people can make a global impact.”

The program, according to NEA officials, will promote school greening, anti-litter campaigns, and sustainable waste management practices. Officials encouraged students to remain innovative and proactive, emphasizing that the fight against plastic waste begins with each individual’s actions.
