The National Security Adviser, Abubakarr Suleiman Jeng, has described the Senegambia Security Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a key step toward fostering mutual benefits and maintaining peace between The Gambia and Senegal.
Speaking at State House in Banjul during a visit by Senegalese delegates, accompanied by the National Director General of Prison Services, DG Ansumana Manneh, Adviser Jeng emphasized that the security partnership would strengthen collaboration and enhance the security sectors of both countries.
He noted that peace in Senegal directly contributes to stability in The Gambia, underlining the timeliness and importance of the MoU for the welfare of citizens on both sides of the border.
“Security requires collaboration. This agreement will benefit the citizens of The Gambia and Senegal alike,” he said, according to the statement by the Office of the National Security Adviser.
On his part, Director General of the Senegal Prison Service, Alioune Ciss, highlighted the central role of security in national stability. He requested that the National Security Adviser coordinate with President Adama Barrow to facilitate the deportation of Senegalese inmates currently serving sentences at Mile Two Central Prison.
Ciss explained that such measures would allow Senegalese families to visit their relatives more easily, as traveling to The Gambia for prison visits is challenging due to distance.
The visit concluded with the Senegalese delegation touring The Gambia Police Force headquarters, where Deputy Inspector General of Police, Demba Sowe, welcomed them and reiterated the importance of regional security cooperation.
