Military crushes coordinated terrorist assaults in Borno, kills dozens in fierce gun battles

Nigerian troops under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have repelled coordinated terrorist attacks in Borno State, dealing a heavy blow to insurgents who attempted to overrun military positions in Buratai and Mallam Fatori.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for OPHK, confirmed that the attempted assaults, which took place on June 5, 2025, were decisively repelled by joint ground and air forces.

“In yet another coordinated effort by the ground forces and Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), scores of terrorists have been neutralised, with assorted arms and ammunition recovered, in a foiled attack on troops in Buratai, Biu Local Government Area and Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Areas of Borno State,” the statement read.

According to Kovangiya, the attack on Buratai was launched in the early hours of the day, with terrorists attempting to deceitfully infiltrate the military base from multiple directions.

“The failed attack on Buratai occurred in the early hours of Thursday, June 5, 2025, when the terrorists attempted to deceitfully infiltrate troops’ location from all approaches.

The troops, however, swiftly engaged the terrorists with heavy gunfire, while the Air Component provided close air support to the gallant troops,” he said.

The joint response proved devastating. Multiple insurgents were reportedly killed, and a large cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), and other military-grade equipment, was recovered from the scenes.

“The coordinated efforts of the ground forces and Air Component demonstrate the military’s commitment to denying terrorists freedom of action,” Kovangiya emphasized.

In addition to successfully neutralizing the initial threat, Nigerian troops reportedly pursued fleeing insurgents, maintaining the offensive and continuing clearance operations in the surrounding area.

“Several lifeless bodies of terrorists were discovered, and a large cache of arms and ammunition was recovered,” he added.

The military has since launched further exploitation of the areas, with sustained air reconnaissance and support ongoing as part of its wider counterinsurgency campaign in the region.
