MC Cham Jr, Business Councillor at the Kanifing Municipal Council and a leading member of the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), has issued a rebuttal to comments made by Momodou Sabally, Adviser to President Adama Barrow, who earlier criticised Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda’s moral authority to speak on ethics.
In a statement titled “Sabally’s Hypocrisy Exposed: A Rebuttal to His Baseless Attacks on Mayor Bensouda,” Cham accused Sabally of “opportunism, inconsistency, and self-contradiction,” arguing that the former UDP campaign manager has “no moral standing to lecture anyone about loyalty and ethics.” He referenced Sabally’s shifting political alliances, saying, “From being an ardent defender of Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorship to suddenly styling himself as a democratic champion, Sabally has demonstrated that moral consistency is alien to him.”
Cham defended Mayor Bensouda’s involvement with the Unite Movement, describing it as “open, transparent, and anchored in the pursuit of values-based politics.” He rejected Sabally’s claims that the group operates as a splinter faction within the UDP, insisting, “Contrary to Sabally’s false claims, there has been no clandestine plot or rebel agenda. The UDP remains a respected party, and those who have chosen new paths have done so publicly and with integrity.”
The rebuttal follows Bensouda’s earlier call for ethics, morals, and accountability in Gambian politics, which Sabally dismissed as hypocritical, accusing the mayor of trying to “hijack” the UDP for personal ambition. Cham, however, argued that Sabally’s criticism stems from “insecurity” and fear of the UMC’s growing appeal, stating that “when those with no new ideas resort to personal attacks, it is because they fear being left behind by a changing political landscape.”
Defending Bensouda’s record at the Kanifing Municipal Council, Cham said the mayor’s leadership has been marked by “transparency, accountability, and delivery of service,” contrasting it with Sabally’s own record. “Before speaking about ethics, perhaps Mr. Sabally should first reflect on his own record and ask himself: who is he to lecture anyone about moral authority?” he wrote.
Cham concluded that the Unite Movement seeks to “transcend personality cults, political hypocrisy, and the endless recycling of self-serving figures,” adding that Bensouda “does not need validation from men who were once found wanting by a commission of enquiry and now pretend to be moral philosophers.”
