The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd), has called for stiffer penalties for drug traffickers to deter foreigners from bringing illicit substances into Nigeria.
Marwa was reacting to the conviction of a Canadian, Adrienne Munju, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison for importing 35.20 kilograms of synthetic cannabis known as “Canadian Loud,” into Nigeria.
Munju, 41, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos during inward clearance of passengers on a KLM flight on October 3.
The Canadian claimed she was recruited online to traffic the drugs for 10,000 Canadian dollars to fund her master’s degree programme back home.
The NDLEA boss in a statement commended the agency’s officers and the judiciary for their swift action on the matter.
