Lagos Red Line Rail Service launches with 500,000 daily capacity as Gov warns against vandalism

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, announced the highly anticipated launch of the Red Line rail service, poised to transform the daily commute for hundreds of thousands of Lagosians.

This milestone marks the second rail system to become operational in less than two years.

The Red Line, spanning 27 kilometers, boasts eight strategically located stations at Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado.

With a projected daily capacity of 500,000 passengers, this rail service is set to revolutionize the way Lagosians navigate their city.

According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, “Today marks the launch of commercial operations of the LMRT Red Line, kicking off passenger services from Agbado to Oyingbo.

“Spanning 27 kilometers, the Red Line has eight stations at Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado. The train service is projected to move about 500,000 Lagosians daily as we ramp up the schedule and provide a viable means of commuting.

“Daily passenger services will depart from Agbado at 6:00 AM, with the second train leaving Iju Station at 7:30 AM. Make sure you have your Cowry Card ready to board.

“Just as with the Blue Line and any other public infrastructure, remember that this project belongs to all of us. Let’s treat it with the respect it deserves.”

Key Features of the Red Line Rail Service:

– Eight Stations: Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado

– Daily Capacity: 500,000 passengers

– Schedule: Daily passenger services depart from Agbado at 6:00 AM, with the second train leaving Iju Station at 7:30 AM

– Payment: Cowry Card required for boarding

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of protecting public assets, warning against vandalism or disruptions. “These are public assets and everybody has the right to protect it,” he stressed.
