Kerewan Area Council has commissioned two new waste management trucks to improve sanitation in The Gambia’s North Bank Region, targeting long-standing waste collection issues in Farafenni and Barra.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Council Chairman Papa Tunkara described the moment as “fulfilling,” reflecting on the persistent challenges the council has faced.
“One of the most daunting challenges we faced as a council since being elected has been the provision of sustainable and resilient waste management solutions for the region,” he said.
The trucks will be deployed in Farafenni and Barra, the region’s busiest towns, to fast-track waste collection and enhance public health.
Tunkara praised Salam Financial Services for its timely intervention. “We were about to lose hope of any possibility of providing a sustainable waste management solution for the region,” he said. “When the possibility to partner with Salam Financial Services came, we didn’t hesitate to make it happen in the best interest of our taxpayers.”
He also commended council members for their dedication. “Chairman Tunkara also commended the efforts of council members for their selfless contribution in making sure the council achieves its goals in the region.”
