The Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has credited what he described as improvements in The Gambia’s health sector to the leadership of Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, while urging journalists and content creators to practise responsible reporting to preserve peace and stability.
Speaking on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez, Dr. Ceesay said the health sector has seen notable developments, highlighting the First Lady’s role in expanding hospital infrastructure and access to oxygen supplies.
“The First Lady is building maternity wards across the health sector, and she has invested in ensuring people have access to oxygen,” he said, adding that Dr. Samateh’s leadership has been pivotal to the sector’s progress.
Dr. Ceesay maintained that both the “soft and hard aspects” of the sector have improved. “The equipment we have procured, the number of ambulances, and the hospitals built under his leadership have never happened before in the history of this country,” he stated. “We are now producing locally trained consultants and specialists, and the number of nurses and midwives has increased significantly.”
Turning to the media, Dr. Ceesay called on practitioners to exercise care in their reporting. “We urge all media houses and content creators to uphold accuracy, fairness, and objectivity, and avoid reporting that could bring division or undermine peace and security,” he said. “We live in a world where people rush for breaking news, but we must be mindful of how we report.”
He referred to a recent confrontation between youths and a police officer, describing the way it was reported as “irresponsible” and urging greater sensitivity in covering such incidents.
