I did not tell Christians to stop paying tithes —Pastor Adeboye clears the air

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has cleared the air on his apology on tithing, saying he never asked Christians to stop paying tithes.

Ripples Nigeria had reported how Adeboye had tendered an apology over an earlier message where he said Christians who do not pay tithes will not make heaven.

Adeboye had made the apology at the National Youth Convention of the church at the RCCG Redemption City, where he said he was wrong about non-tithers not making heaven as there was nothing like that in the Bible.

“I’m apologizing for saying ‘if you don’t pay tithe, you won’t make it to heaven,’ Adeboye had said.

“I’m sorry, that’s wrong, and it’s not in the Bible. What the Bible says is, ‘Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God.

“I am going to be talking to everybody as soon as God permit me, I am going to apologise for making a mistake for saying that if you don’t pay tithe, you will not be making it to heaven. That is wrong.

After the public apology, many were quick to latch on to it with different narratives, with some claiming the clergy said Christians should no longer pay tithes.

However, on Saturday during the church’s October Holy Ghost Service at the Redemption City, Pastor Adeboye clarified his statement and said he never said Christians should no longer pay tithes neither did he discourage its payment.

“The issue of tithing became contentious, and I decided to apologise for anything I might have said wrong,’ he said while addressing the issue.

“Yet, within an hour, it was being circulated online that I said Christians should stop paying tithes.

“Today, I’m close to giving 90 per cent but I am far from 10 per cent. So, I said it is wrong to limit yourself to 10 per cent when God can take you to a higher percentage. As you grow in the Lord, you should grow in praising Him, winning souls, and in giving.

“I said that for beginners, the minimum is what God calls 10 per cent. I said, from now on, begin to increase what you give.

“Of all I said, the only thing they put on the internet is that Adeboye apologised, and therefore, people should no longer pay their tithes. I said 10 per cent should be the minimum,” he emphasized.
