GPF Backs Government’s Decision on Coroner’s Inquest Into Omar Badjie’s Death

By: Isatou Sarr

The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has welcomed the government’s decision to establish a coroner’s inquest into the death of Omar Badjie in Mandinaring.

In a statement released on 29th September, the GPF noted that the move follows an earlier announcement that an internal investigative panel had been instituted to examine the circumstances surrounding Badjie’s death.

“The GPF acknowledges the government’s pronouncement to establish a coroner’s inquest into the matter,” the statement said.

The police force described the coroner’s inquest as an important measure to ensure that the case is handled with transparency, fairness, and accountability. It further assured the public of full cooperation, pledging to provide every necessary support to enable the process to reach credible conclusions.

“This underscores the GPF’s commitment to the rule of law, respect for human rights, and the pursuit of justice without fear or favor,” the statement added.

The GPF also appealed to the public for calm, emphasizing the importance of allowing both the internal investigation and the independent coroner’s inquest to proceed without interference.
