GNOC President Says Commonwealth Games Celebrates Diversity and Unity

By: Kemo Kanyi

Bai Dodou Jallow, president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), has described the Commonwealth Games as more than a sporting event, calling it a celebration of humanity, solidarity, and shared destiny.

Speaking during the King’s Baton Relay on Wednesday in Banjul, led by Vice President H.E. Muhammed B.S. Jallow, Bai Dodou Jallow emphasized that the Games provide an opportunity to celebrate youth participation and community engagement through sport.

“It showcases our national culture, identity, and hospitality to the world. It promotes the values of inclusivity, sustainability, and excellence that define the Commonwealth spirit,” he said.

The GNOC president added that the Commonwealth Games inspire the younger generation to embrace teamwork, discipline, and unity, while reinforcing the importance of using sport as a tool for personal and social development.

He noted that The Gambia welcomes the King’s Baton with open arms, saying the nation’s reputation for hospitality, peace, and friendliness reflects the Commonwealth’s core ideals of togetherness and mutual respect. “As the Baton passes through our nation, it reminds us of our responsibility to use sport as a tool for harmony, understanding, and progress,” he added.

Mr. Jallow described the King’s Baton as more than a symbol; it is an invitation for Commonwealth members to dream boldly, have self-belief, and contribute to shaping a future built on unity and opportunity.

He further highlighted the role of sport in promoting diplomacy, strengthening communities, and nurturing young talent. “The GNOC, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, remains committed to advancing the cause of sports development and harnessing the power of sport to inspire national pride and global cooperation,” he said.
