A pro-youth development academy has launched the ‘Textures Intercultural Exchange,’ a program aimed at promoting advanced education in cosmetology.

Gaye Njorro Academy, a leading institution dedicated to empowering youth through vocational training, in partnership with Afro Hair Science International launched the program recently.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Chief Executive Director Fatou Saine Gaye described the initiative as both timely and crucial for youth development.

“There is a lot that goes into hair science, and it is a process. My passion is youth and women empowerment. When I see women thriving, I believe the future can be built. Through this program, I am contributing to the development of the country by training young women to become independent,” Gaye said.

She emphasized the role of technology and creativity in education. “Innovation is a daily process. If you want to grow, you have to learn and share. This cultural exchange is fundamental because it paves the way to learn new ideas,” she added.

Ladosha Wright, author and cosmetologist, highlighted her mission to teach students about Afro hair science. “We are here to equip students with problem-solving skills for hair-related challenges. This will boost their self-esteem and advance their careers. Considering the population of The Gambia and its unique hair types, there is a strong demand for this education,” she said.

Wright also reflected on the historical context of the slave trade, stressing the importance of coming together to elevate the field of cosmetology. She thanked the Academy’s management for their support and encouraged students to remain consultative and open-minded.

Another speaker, Julanda Zachary, reinforced the importance of youth skills development, commending the Academy for its commitment to nurturing talented young women.

The Textures Intercultural Exchange initiative is expected to strengthen empowerment, education, and cultural appreciation, particularly within the beauty and creative industries, positioning young Gambian women for a brighter future.
