ActionAid International, The Gambia, in partnership with the European Union (EU), has launched a community garden project in Toroba Village to strengthen food security and empower women through sustainable agriculture.

The official opening was held on October 18, 2025. Speaking at the event, Ndella Faye Colley, Executive Director of ActionAid International, The Gambia, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to inclusive development.

“We are here to promote inclusive development, and that means everyone in the community should participate,” she said. “We are particularly happy that this project targets women first because when you help a woman, you help everybody.”

Isatou Jallow, the women’s leader of Toroba Village, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community.

“We are grateful to ActionAid and the European Union. They have brought real development to our community and reduced much of the hard work we used to face,” she said.

EU Ambassador to The Gambia, Ms. Immaculada Roca i Cortés, also shared her delight at the impact of the initiative.

“I am happy to see the people of this community smiling and enjoying their new garden. I encourage everyone to take good care of it and make the best use of it,” she remarked.

Fafa D. Cham, Head of Programmes and Policy at ActionAid International, The Gambia, outlined the project’s broader goals.

“Over the three years of this project, we hope to reach 25,000 women, 800 youth, 200 persons with disabilities, 100 extension workers, 150 journalists and bloggers, 150 environmental activists, and 200 government and private sector officials involved in environmental and organic fertilizer production,” he stated.

Community gardens like the one in Toroba play a vital role in fostering social connections, improving health and well-being, and protecting the environment. They serve as spaces where people can grow food, share knowledge, and strengthen community resilience through sustainable development.
