Essa Faal Calls for Unity, Accountability and Debt Discipline in Gambia

International lawyer and former TRRC lead counsel Essa Faal has renewed his call for national unity, accountable leadership, and prudent economic management, stressing that Gambia’s future depends on transparency, reform, and citizens seeing each other as one family.

Appearing on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez, the presidential aspirant reflected on his journey as a defender of justice and national truth, from his “pivotal role at the TRRC” to becoming one of the strongest voices for political and economic reform.

He emphasised that national unity starts with communication and cultural understanding. “The whole essence of language is to be able to communicate and be understood by one another,” he said. Faal noted that national cohesion is sometimes hindered by linguistic divides, given that Gambians speak multiple ethnic languages.

“The more languages one can speak, the more effective you will be,” he stated. “Gambia is a place where we should see ourselves as brothers and sisters so we can relate and communicate. That unity is why I am running for presidency.”

Turning to economic management, Faal raised alarm over the country’s escalating debt burden. “I have consistently said the debt is still with us — a debt of 60 billion dalasi. For a budget of this size, 13 billion goes to debt payment. We are digging graves on our shoulders,” he warned.

He criticised the government’s borrowing strategy, saying it prioritises political gain over long-term stability. “This government believes that when you invest in infrastructure you will win elections, but they don’t realise repayment comes at the expense of health care, education, and economic stability. The sacrifices are too heavy.”

Faal concluded by urging Gambians to demand accountability and leadership committed to national progress over political survival.
