Essa Mbaye Faal, leader of the APP-Sobeya, has accused the Gambia government of neglecting its core responsibilities to citizens, claiming that its main focus has shifted to attacking opposition parties.
Speaking during a grassroots political meeting in Latrikunda on Sunday, Mr. Faal criticized President Adama Barrow’s administration, saying it has failed to meaningfully improve the lives of Gambians after nearly ten years in power.
He described the current state of the country as critical, alleging that The Gambia is governed by what he termed “an unserious, unpatriotic, corrupt, and unenlightened government” that has abandoned its development agenda in favor of political confrontation.
“We are different from other African countries that are on the right trajectory for development,” Mr. Faal said. “We have a government whose primary occupation is attacking the opposition. They are always in contention with opponents in the media instead of working to develop the nation. This is a government that has taken corruption as its culture.”
The APP-Sobeya leader further alleged that senior government officials continue to misappropriate public funds meant to address challenges in education, health, agriculture, and other key sectors.
“When I see such things happening, I ask myself whether these people have any sympathy for Gambians,” he added.
Mr. Faal urged citizens to take responsibility for the country’s future and use democratic means to bring about change. He warned against complacency in the face of alleged corruption and mismanagement, stressing that only the people can shape a better Gambia.
Reaffirming his party’s commitment to youth empowerment, the APP-Sobeya leader said that under his leadership, young people would be given greater opportunities to contribute to national development. He accused the current government of failing to support youth, which he said has led to growing poverty and slowed national progress.
