Empowering Women in Fish Processing: A Major Milestone for PROREFISH Gambia.

The Climate Resilient Fishery Initiative for Livelihood Improvement (PROREFISH Gambia), funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources, has achieved a remarkable milestone in advancing sustainable fisheries and empowering local communities.

From August 18th to September 19th, 2025, PROREFISH Gambia conducted a comprehensive five-week capacity-building training program in Gunjur, targeting 125 beneficiaries, including Fisheries staff and women fish processors. This initiative focused on:

– Use and maintenance of the FAO-Thiaroye Fish Processing Technique (FTT)

– Bookkeeping and financial literacy

– Organizational structure and user fee collection

– Hygiene, sanitation, and fish processing best practices

A key highlight of this program was its emphasis on empowering women in fish processing. Women participants received specialized training in the FAO-Thiaroye technique, a revolutionary, energy-efficient method designed to reduce post-harvest losses and produce high-quality fish products. This innovation not only improves food safety and product value but also enhances the sustainability and profitability of fish processing activities, directly benefiting women entrepreneurs and consumers alike.

This milestone reflects PROREFISH Gambia’s commitment to climate resilience, livelihood improvement, and gender-inclusive development in the fisheries sector.
