EFCC says Yahaya Bello’s camp lied, claims ex-gov did not visit its office

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has categorically denied reports that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is in their custody.

In a statement released on Wednesday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale clarified that Bello remains wanted due to alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges, with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.

Oyewale emphasized, “Media reports claiming Yahaya Bello is in our holding facility are incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.”

The EFCC had previously declared Bello wanted, and according to Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, the Commission has a “shining track record in the prosecution of politically exposed persons” and will continue to exercise its mandate in the nation’s interest.

The former governor’s media office had earlier in the day released a statement that Bello had made himself available for questioning at the EFCC office, and that he had been accompanied by a number of prominent Nigerians on the visit.

But the commission has clarified that it was a ruse, and that the former governor never visited their office, neither was he in their custody.
