Driver faces multiple charges over crash that led to vendor’s leg amputation

A mbahal seller who lost her leg after being struck by a speeding car has testified in court, as the trial of Babucarr Sawo, commonly known as Daddy, continues at Bundung Magistrates’ Court.

Sanneh Cham told the court she was sitting with her granddaughter at Latrikunda Piccadilly Junction on 11 August when a vehicle hit her from behind. She explained that she noticed the car rushing toward them and attempted to escape, but was hit from behind.

She was trapped under the vehicle and later underwent a leg amputation after nearly a month in hospital. Appearing in a wheelchair, Cham said she can no longer carry out her daily activities and used to earn about D7,000 a day from her sales.

Sawo faces five charges, including reckless driving, unlicensed driving, and grievous harm. Police allege he drove a Honda Acura dangerously at Tabokoto Piccadilly Junction, causing the crash.

The case resumes on 15, 22, and 28 October.
