Darboe Calls for Unity as UDP Faces Defections

By: Kemo Kanyi

United Democratic Party (UDP) flag bearer Ousainou Darboe has called on party militants to maintain cohesion despite recent resignations of some senior members.

Addressing supporters in Italy during his European tour, Darboe reminded party sympathisers that resignations are not new in the UDP, emphasizing that the party remains committed to its core value of championing democracy.

In recent weeks, several key figures, including Tombong Saidy and Karafa Sonko, left the party, citing concerns over its adherence to democratic principles. However, Darboe dismissed suggestions that these departures would negatively affect the party’s performance in upcoming elections.

“There have been so many talks recently about the party. But I want to assure you that such issues are not new in UDP. The party was founded by UDP, GPP, and NCP. Later on, Sheriff Dibba and his entire membership left us, but we remained strong,” Darboe told militants in Italy.

He recalled that in 2018, nine elected officials, including eight parliamentarians and a regional chairman, resigned, yet the party continued to uphold its democratic values despite predictions of collapse.

Darboe urged women politicians and party militants worldwide to continue advocating for the UDP and mobilizing support, including from non-members, to strengthen the party’s mission for a better Gambia.
