By: Isatou Sarr

The Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered Abdou Camara of Gunjur to pay a fine and compensation of D47,000.00 in default to serve two years six months imprisonment.

Camara was convicted and sentenced on two counts of stealing and one count of assaulting a police officer.

He appeared before Magistrate K.B. Sambou while unrepresented and Sgt. 4422 M.J. Sallah and Cpl. 7232 E. Fofana represented the Inspector General of Police.

According to the prosecution, Camara stole mobile phones belonging to the complainants. He later threw the stolen phones into the bush, causing damage. When asked by the court for his reaction to the facts, Camara admitted the offences and confirmed the facts were true.

In his plea for leniency, the convict told the court: “I am asking for mercy. I am the breadwinner of the family, and I regret my action.”

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Sambou said: “The offences committed are serious and unforgivable, particularly the act of throwing the stolen phones into the bush. However, this court will exercise mercy because you pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity without wasting the court’s time, and you are a first-time offender.”

The court accordingly sentenced Camara to pay a fine of D10,000, in default six months’ imprisonment on count one, and D5,000, in default six months’ imprisonment on count two. He was also ordered to compensate the complainants D32,000 for the damaged phones, in default one year, six months’ imprisonment.

The sentences are to run concurrently, bringing the total fine and compensation to D47,000.00, or in default, a custodial term of two years six months.

The matter was adjourned to October 27, 2025, for the prosecution to call witnesses on the third count of assaulting a police officer.
