The Chinese Embassy in The Gambia has unveiled a landmark 100% zero-tariff and zero-quota policy for all Gambian commodities entering the Chinese market, a move expected to boost exports, strengthen bilateral ties, and create new opportunities for young Gambian entrepreneurs.
The announcement was made by Counsellor Tong Zhan, Head of Economic and Commercial Affairs, during the inaugural edition of the Gambia Youth Chamber of Commerce (GYCC) Award Night, held in partnership with the China-Gambia Friendship Bantaba.
The event, themed “Honouring Excellence, Inspiring Generations,” celebrated the innovation, resilience, and achievements of young Gambian entrepreneurs driving growth across diverse sectors of the economy. It brought together development partners, business leaders, and youth innovators to recognise outstanding contributions to national development.
Counsellor Tong commended the entrepreneurial spirit of Gambian youth, noting that many have established business links with Chinese partners, directly or indirectly.
“China is a big market. We open our market fully to The Gambia—100% tariff-free, zero quota. That means all commodities from The Gambia are welcomed in China. This is our gesture of friendship and a commitment to work together with our Gambian partners,” he said.
He further revealed that China and The Gambia have finalised a protocol agreement for groundnut and cashew quarantine, paving the way for the first shipment of agricultural products in December.
Counsellor Tong also highlighted opportunities for collaboration in the packaging industry, which he identified as a key area for value addition and cost reduction.
“We are working to connect Gambian businesses with Chinese partners who can supply packaging materials, machinery, and equipment. This will help lower production costs and encourage more investment in The Gambia,” he explained.
Representing the GYCC President, Horeja Jeng praised the growing partnership between the Chamber and the Chinese Embassy, describing it as a relationship built on shared success and mutual benefit.
“Invest in youth, not as beneficiaries but as partners, for the builders of tomorrow are seated among us tonight. Thank you for believing in the power of youth-led transformation. Your support tells young people that they matter, and their dreams are valid,” she stated.
Award winners expressed joy and gratitude, describing the recognition as motivation to expand their businesses and make greater contributions to the national economy.
The GYCC Award Night reaffirmed the crucial role of young entrepreneurs in shaping The Gambia’s future, and China’s new zero-tariff initiative may just be the boost they need to take Gambian products to the global stage.
