Chelsea beat 10-man Benfica to reach Club W’Cup quarter-final

Chelsea have advanced to the quarter-final of the FIFA Club World Cup after beating 10-man Benfica in a delayed round of 16 game on Saturday night.

Both sides had struggled get ahead in the first half even though Chelsea dominated.

The Blues eventually opened scoring through a Recee James free-kick in the 64th minute. The game was later suspended in the 86th minute because of weather.

After about two hours of wait, the game restarted and Angel di Maria equalised for Benfica with a penalty to take the game into extra time.

Two yellow cards in the 96th minute and first minute of extra time saw youngster Gianluca Prestianni sent off, the latter for a late challenge on Levi Colwill.

Chelsea then made good use of their numerical advantage as they ran riot againt the Portuguese side in the second half of extra time.

Goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in Charlotte, North Carolina eventually saw Chelsea through to the quarter-finals with a 4-1 victory.

Chelsea will now take on Palmieras in the last eight. Palmieras had defeated Botafogo 1-0 after extra time in another round of 16 clash earlier in the day.
