British Lady Testifies In PIU Shooting Case

By: Nicholas Bass

The PIU shooting case yesterday resumed at the Banjul High Court with a British Lady testifying.

Kathleen McGee, the British Lady told the High Court that she communicated with the alleged PIU shooter, Ousainou Bojang, for several hours on the night of the fatal incident that claimed the lives of two police officers and left a third injured.

According to the charge sheet, Ousainou Bojang, on or about 12 September 2023, at Sukuta Traffic Light, allegedly caused the deaths of Police Constables Pateh Jallow and Sang Mendy, and seriously injured Constable Ancy Jawo.

Testifying before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh, McGee, who appeared as the eleventh defence witness (DW11), said she had a WhatsApp conversation with the accused on the night of the incident while she was in the United Kingdom.

She told the court that she saved the conversation in her iCloud account and confirmed her intention to produce it before the court.

Following her testimony, defence counsel Lamin J. Darboe, representing Ousainou Bojang, applied for the WhatsApp conversation between McGee and the accused to be tendered in evidence. The application was granted without objection from the state.

Justice Jaiteh admitted and marked the eleven-page WhatsApp exchange as Defence Exhibit D38.

Continuing her testimony, McGee, who described herself as the boss of Brufut’s Smiling Coast Residence, said the accused worked for her as a compound caretaker, but not as a security guard.

She told the court that Ousainou worked twice a week, both morning and night shifts, and stayed at his family home when off duty.

McGee further explained that a day before the incident, Ousainou had gone to the Senegambia Police Station to report a dispute involving his white girlfriend, Claudette.

When asked by defence counsel whether she was later contacted by the police, McGee said she received a call from a senior officer named Yerro Saidy, who identified himself before speaking with her.

She added that she pleaded with Officer Saidy to help Ousainou resolve the issue with his girlfriend.

McGee told the court she was surprised to learn of Ousainou’s arrest through a police press release issued on 13 September.

When cross-examined by State Counsel A.A. Wakawa about Ousainou’s character, McGee said she had never heard anything negative about him and confirmed that she knew his family.

However, State Counsel Wakawa put it to her that she did not present any proof showing that the WhatsApp conversation she tendered was indeed with the accused, Ousainou Bojang, the alleged PIU shooter. McGee admitted that she did not provide such verification.

The court then ordered the witness to provide Ousainou’s telephone number, which she gave as his Africell line.

The case was adjourned to next week for continuation.
