Bensouda Explains Mode of Payments Received at Janneh Commission

By: Kemo Kanyi

Former lead counsel of the Janneh Commission, Mrs Amie Bensouda Thursday explained to parliamentary select committee the mode of payments made to her while carrying out her mandate at the commission.

Responding to questions from commission members, Mrs. Bensouda was asked whether she received payments via her personal account or her firm’s account. She stated that payments must have been made into the firm’s account, adding the Fee Notes from the Ministry of Justice would indicate to what account monies should be paid. Mrs Bensouda affirmed that she was sure that payments were made into the firm’s account and not her personal account.

She was further questioned whether the same procedure applied when it came to personal arrangements in regards to her services at the Janneh Commission. She replied in affirmative.

“Yes, I work for the firm. If I accept any contract, the monies are paid to the firm because I use the firm’s resources, and the firm would pay me. So they would be paid into the firm’s account,” she maintained.

The commission members questioned why she used the letterhead of the firm for her personal engagement. She says that is not significant because that’s the way they operate and has no consequences on the firm. She reiterated that she was engaged personally and would be responsible for any default in contractual agreement.

The services of this letter is my sole responsibility. No individual or entity accepts or assumes responsibility or has a liability to the ministry or any third party for the services provided under or pursuant to this term of engagement,” she outlined from her contractual document.

She added that this has categorically stated that the assignment was her personal responsibility.
