President Adama Barrow has inaugurated the long-awaited Hakalang Road, signalling his government’s continued commitment to transforming national infrastructure and improving the living standards of Gambians.

The 84.5-kilometre road, which connects settlements in Lower and Upper Nuimi and Jokadou districts, has been described by residents as a life-changing development after decades of poor road conditions that hindered transportation, access to social services, and economic activity.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Saturday, President Barrow noted that for decades, communities in the North Bank Region, particularly Upper Niumi, faced severe isolation due to deteriorated roads.

“Our farmers struggled extremely hard to transport their produce, while traders faced huge obstacles before reaching the business centres of their choice. Access to schools, markets, healthcare facilities, and other services remained a nightmare,” the President said.

He emphasizes that the Hakalang Road is more than an infrastructure project; it is a symbol of progress, unity, and inclusive development, linking more than 30 communities and boosting economic activity, social mobility, and tourism. The road provides improved access to historic sites such as Kunta Kinteh Island and Jufureh, enhancing tourism potential and local business opportunities.

Governor Lamin Saidykhan praised the government for complementing the road project with social services, including electricity, schools, healthcare facilities, water supply, and farming support like tractors.

Community leaders and other speakers expressed gratitude to President Barrow, highlighting that the road has empowered residents, fostered a sense of belonging, and improved livelihoods. They underscore that these developments are not political favors but the people’s rightful share of national development, delivered after decades of unmet needs.

The Hakalang Road inauguration forms part of the Barrow administration’s broader national infrastructure program aimed at enhancing connectivity, promoting economic growth, and improving the quality of life for Gambians across all regions.
