Africell Gambia has completed its nationwide 25,000 Trees for 25 Years of Impact campaign, a year-long environmental initiative launched to commemorate the company’s 25th anniversary in The Gambia.
The final planting took place on October 31st in Tanji, where 99 coconut trees and one Baobab tree were planted by Africell Group Chairman and CEO Ziad Dalloul, members of the Africell Group Executive Committee, and the Africell Gambia management team led by CEO Hussein Diab-Ghanem.
The day carried the message: “We promised, we delivered.” The Baobab tree, planted personally by Ziad Dalloul, was chosen for its deep symbolism. Known to take generations to mature, it represents Africell’s enduring commitment to The Gambia, a pledge not for today, but for future generations.
According to Ronald Senghore, Africell’s Senior Marketing and Communications Manager, the choice of Tanji as the last location was deliberate.
“The coconut trees will help combat coastal erosion and protect the beach environment. We are sure that the local business owners will honour their pledge to nurture and sustain the new trees because they are invested in making sure that the ocean does not take over their land.”
Launched in April 2025, the campaign covered regions from the coast to the Central River Region, planting a diverse range of mangroves, fruit trees, and indigenous hardwoods including mahogany, baobab, kapok, and locust bean.
Africell’s partnerships with the National Environment Agency, the Forestry Department, and Green Up Gambia were key to the initiative’s success. Together, they restored tree cover, empowered local women’s groups, and improved access to clean water through the installation of six community boreholes, with plans to reach 25 by 2026.
Reflecting on the milestone, Africell Gambia CEO Hussein Diab Ghanem said the achievement underscores the power of collaboration and purpose-driven action.
“Through the Africell Impact Foundation, we are committed to national development not only through connectivity, but also through initiatives that protect the environment and empower our people. Our partnership with Green Up Gambia has been so mutually inspiring that we exceeded expectations, planting over 100,000 mangroves across The Gambia. Reaching 25,000 trees is more than a milestone; it is a living legacy of hope, growth, and commitment to future generations.”
The 25,000 Trees for 25 Years of Impact campaign forms part of Africell’s broader sustainability agenda under the Africell Impact Foundation, which focuses on Education, Health, Art, and the Environment.
