Activities paralysed in Abuja court as judiciary workers begin strike

Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, locked out judges, lawyers, staff, and litigants from accessing the court following the indefinite strike declared by the union’s national body.

All the gates leading to the court’s headquarters along the Shehu Shagari Way in Abuja were under lock when journalists checked the high-rise building on Monday.

The JUSUN national body had in a circular issued on May 30 by the Acting National Secretary, M.J. Akwashiki, asked all its chapters’ chairmen to direct their members to stay at home from midnight of June 1.

The circular read: “This directive follows unfruitful meetings in the instance of the Minister of Labour and Employment, who was conciliating on our matter.

“We believe that as directed by the organs of the union, National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Council (NEC) of our great union, the action will continue until further notice.

“Our demands are for the government to pay us five months’ wage award, implement the N70,000 National Minimum Wage, as well as the 25/35 percent salary increase. Solidarity forever.”

Although there were reports that some chapters of the union had backed out of the industrial action, the FHC gates were still under lock and key as of 10:00 a.m. on Monday.
