A man identified as Mamodou Camara was on Monday arraigned before Principal Magistrate Sallah M’bai of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on four counts of obtaining goods by false pretences, contrary to Section 265 of the Criminal Code.
Sergeant 4195 Baldeh appeared for the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and presented the charges against the accused.
According to the particulars of offence on count one, the prosecution alleged that in October 2025, at Manjai Kunda in the Kanifing Municipality, the accused, with intent to defraud, obtained D9,000 from Chetten Brigitte under the false pretext of renting her a house, a representation he knew to be false at the time.
On count two, the police alleged that in June 2025, the accused obtained D15,000 from Yankuba Bah under similar circumstances, also claiming he would rent him a house he never intended to provide.
Count three stated that during the same month, June 2025, the accused obtained D30,000 from Muhammed Sedibeh, again under false pretences of renting a house, knowing the representation to be untrue.
In count four, the prosecution alleged that the accused defrauded Josephine Woobay of D18,000 at Manjai Kunda in June 2025, claiming he would rent her a house when he knew such representation to be false.
When the charges were read and explained to him, Camara pleaded not guilty to all four counts. The court accordingly entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.
Prosecutor Sergeant Baldeh then requested an adjournment to allow the prosecution to secure its witnesses. He did not object to the defence’s application for bail, noting that the offences were bailable.
Defence counsel S. Akinbo, representing the accused, applied for bail, which the court granted.
In her ruling, Principal Magistrate Sallah M’bai granted bail to the accused in the sum of D120,000 with two Gambian sureties, each required to deposit a valid National Identity Card or Passport with the court registrar, along with their registered GSM numbers.
The case was adjourned to 25 November 2025 at 1:30 p.m. for the commencement of the prosecution’s evidence.
