A Tribute to Momodou Bamba Jeng (Mbassim Jeng)

A Citizen of Kaur

Today, the entire community of Kaur Wharf Town mourns the passing of one of its most dedicated sons, Momodou Bamba Jeng, fondly known as Mbassim Jeng. A younger brother to the late Alhagie Alieu Badara Jeng, Mbassim was a pillar in every sense, a teacher, a friend, a brother, and above all, a true servant of Kaur.

For those of us who grew up in Kaur, Mbassim was more than a familiar face, he was a constant presence in our lives. I was blessed to have him as my primary school teacher, and even more blessed to know him for over fifty years as a friend and a brother. In all that time, I never once saw him angry. His gentle smile was the first thing you noticed when you met him, a smile that carried warmth, humility, and sincerity.

Mbassim loved Kaur with every fibre of his being. His dedication to the development of our town and the welfare of its people was unmatched. He was present in every organisation, every association, every committee that worked for Kaur’s progress. Whether it was preparing for the annual Ziyareh, reminding people of community meetings, or mobilising support for local initiatives, Mbassim was always at the forefront, often using his own resources to visit homes, travel across the Greater Banjul Area, and collect subscriptions for programmes that benefited all of us.

To many, he was the de facto leader, organiser, and treasurer of almost anything related to Kaur. But to those who knew him personally, he was much more. He was down to earth, approachable, and exceptionally kind. No one was too young, too old, or too unimportant for him. He would sit, chat, laugh, and share stories with everyone. In heated meetings, he was the calm voice, the peacemaker who reminded us all of our shared purpose.

Today, Mbassim was laid to rest at the Kaur Janneh Kunta Cemetery, returning to the soil he loved so dearly. As we bid him farewell, we also celebrate the life of a man whose devotion, humility, and goodness touched every corner of our community.

Kaur has lost one of its finest. We will miss his smile, his presence, his commitment, and his unwavering spirit of service. But his legacy lives on in the hearts of all of us who were blessed to walk this journey with him.

May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and surround his loved ones with strength and comfort. Mbassim was a cool, gentle soul, and Kaur will forever remember him.
