Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed for the second time in two days, leaving the country facing another power crisis.
The latest breakdown, which occurred on Thursday, follows a similar collapse on Tuesday, bringing the total number of grid failures in 2024 to 11.
As of 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nigeria’s 22 power plants were only able to generate 2,323 megawatts (MW) of electricity, a drastic drop from the peak generation of 3,743 MW earlier that morning. By midday, power generation had fallen to zero, with no electricity being produced at all.
The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) reported a power outage at 11:29 a.m., notifying customers of the system failure.

“Dear Esteemed Customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 7 November 2024, at 11:29 hrs, affecting supply within our network,” the company stated. “Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”
This incident comes just two days after the grid collapsed on Tuesday, marking the 10th such failure this year.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to provide any official statement or details regarding the cause of the latest collapse. The frequent breakdowns of the national grid continue to disrupt power supply across the country, deepening Nigeria’s ongoing energy crisis.
Though, as at the time of this report, power had been restored in some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
