Nigerian govt, labour discuss plans to slash transport fares, food costs

The Federal Government and Organised Labour have joined forces to address the escalating costs of transportation and essential commodities, particularly food items in the country.

This collaborative effort comes on the heels of the House of Representatives’ urgent call for the government to reverse the recent petrol price hike and stabilize petrol and cooking gas prices.

According to Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, during a press briefing on Wednesday, the government is committed to ongoing engagement with organized labour, seeking to prevent tensions and foster constructive dialogue.

“These are just general discussions. Government is always desirous of engaging with Labour, this is one of such engagements.

“We will continue to interact with them. We won’t wait until there is tension about anything before we engage Labour”, Idris stated.

Key outcomes from the meeting include:

– Reducing Transport Fares: Strategies to decrease transport costs, a major contributor to rising food prices.

– Essential Commodities: Measures to make foodstuffs and other essential items more affordable.

– Minimum Wage: A meeting with state governors to ensure the N70,000 new minimum wage is implemented nationwide in October.

“We will continue to interact with them. We won’t wait until there is tension about anything before we engage Labour.”
