Regional Tailors Association Holds Congress in KMC

 By Cecilia E.L. Mendy

The Kanifing Municipality Regional Tailors Association (KMRTA) recently held its first congress in two years, aiming to strengthen tailoring skills, apprenticeship, and unity among tailors in the municipality.

Speaking at the congress, Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda emphasized the importance of teamwork within the association. “Alone we can do little; together we can do much,” he said, urging members to cooperate and avoid prolonged stays in leadership positions to allow fresh ideas to flourish.

Mayor Bensouda highlighted the global fashion industry, citing Zara as an example of its scale and profitability. He encouraged local tailors to organize fashion shows and develop their own brands to enhance visibility and competitiveness.

Councillor MC Cham commended KMRTA for its initiatives, recalling the challenges faced by tailors in Ebo Town before his tenure. He urged members to continue supporting the association’s leadership.

KMRTA President Modou Salieu Jallow said the association aims to increase the visibility of tailors in the coming years. He called on Mayor Bensouda to create more opportunities for tailors in the municipality and stated he intends to serve only one additional two-year-term if unopposed.

Programme Manager Awa Jobarteh noted that this was the first regional tailors association in The Gambia, attributing its creation to President Jallow. She appealed for the establishment of a training school for aspiring tailors, noting that the association already possessed unused machines that could support such an initiative.

Representing the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Musu Kebba Jammeh highlighted the role of style and fashion in preserving cultural identity and reaffirmed NCAC’s commitment to supporting Gambian arts, culture, and craftsmanship.

At the conclusion of the congress, Modou Salieu Jallow was re-elected unopposed as KMRTA President, with most executive committee members also elected unopposed.
