By: The Fatu Network News Desk

Sustained gunfire erupted this afternoon near the national election commission headquarters in Bissau, according to a Reuters correspondent and two local residents, heightening tensions as Guinea-Bissau awaits provisional results from Sunday’s presidential election.

Residents were seen fleeing the area as shots continued around 1300 GMT, though it remains unclear who was involved in the shooting. Both incumbent Umaro Sissoco Embaló and challenger Fernando Dias have already claimed victory ahead of Thursday’s announcement.
