Tombong Saidy, a senior member of the newly formed Unite Movement for Change (UMC), has responded to recent comments made by United Democratic Party (UDP) leader, Lawyer Ousainu Darboe, describing them as “misleading” and an attempt to downplay his contributions to the party.
In an interview aired on Eye Africa Television, Mr. Darboe appeared to dismiss the relevance of Saidy’s role in the UDP, suggesting that his influence was minimal. However, in a statement released on Sunday, Saidy said such remarks were inaccurate and unfair, noting that his service to the UDP was both active and impactful.
“I was elected by UDP delegates to serve as the Senior Administrative Secretary for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, and as the Administrative Secretary for Media and Communication, two critical portfolios in the party’s national structure,” he stated.
According to Saidy, he also served on the UDP’s Campaign and Organising Committee and the National Fundraising Committee, where, under the leadership of Hon. Suku Singhateh and Zainab Diab, they raised millions of dalasis to support the party’s activities.
He argued that Mr. Darboe’s remarks reflected a “troubling mindset” within the UDP, one that measures loyalty by longevity rather than contribution.
“When Mr. Darboe seeks to dismiss my relevance because I joined the UDP in 2016, it only shows that, in the UDP, loyalty is measured not by service, but by how long you’ve been around,” Saidy said. “I joined the party late, yes—but in that short time, my impact was far greater than many who have been members since 1996.”
He further described the UDP as a party that “ridicules the contributions of new members,” arguing that such an attitude contradicts its own principles of inclusivity and democracy.
“If the UDP truly believed in democracy, it would celebrate effort and talent, not seniority and entitlement,” Saidy said, adding that the UMC’s goal is to build a political movement that values fairness, inclusion, and merit.
“The future belongs to those who build, not those who belittle,” he concluded.
