The National Agency Against Human Trafficking in Persons (NAATIP) on Wednesday organised a day-long capacity-building training for religious leaders.
The training took place at the Coconut Residence Hotel on Wednesday, which was aimed at reaching out to influential community leaders with a large audience. It was attended by Imams and Pastors.
Isatou Dabo, the Deputy Director of NAATIP, said that working hand-in-hand with these highly respected community leaders will enhance the cause of fighting against human trafficking and exploitation.
She stated that most people who are trafficked are forced to engage in ill behaviour against their will, outlining that some are being exploited by their traffickers while making money out of them.
“We have seen an increased trend in the area of sexual exploitation, labour, and other areas. We believe that when you use your platforms and preach or advise against these ills, it will have a significant impact on both the perpetrators and victims,” she urged.
Reverend Rodney Louis Prom, a Board Member of NAATIP and representative of the Christian Council, said most victims have been deceived into human trafficking and exploitation at their expense for the gains of their masters. He reminded the religious leaders that society needs to protect such vulnerable people.
Mr. Omar Mbowe, who represented the Supreme Islamic Council of The Gambia, urged participants to use their influence and make people understand what’s at stake in human trafficking and exploitation.
