AFRICMED Supports UniGaMSA’s Breast Cancer Awareness Drive

Africmed International Hospital has extended its support to the University of The Gambia Medical Students Association (UniGaMSA) in a bid to promote breast cancer awareness and screening across the greater Banjul area.

On Friday, 18 October 2025, UniGaMSA, with backing from Africmed, organized an outreach program focused on early detection, education, and free clinical screening, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This initiative forms part of Africmed’s decade-long Corporate Social Responsibility efforts in The Gambia.

Speaking about the campaign, Africmed’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Omar Jagne, said the program aimed to promote early detection, educate the public on breast cancer prevention, and provide free screening to improve community health outcomes. “Early detection saves lives,” Dr Jagne emphasized.

The event saw participation from 52 women, who underwent registration, counselling, and clinical breast examinations conducted by medical students and doctors from the University of The Gambia and Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH). Participants with abnormal or suspicious findings were referred to EFSTH for follow-up evaluation.

Mamadou B. Jallow, president of UniGaMSA, highlighted that the exercise aimed to increase awareness of breast cancer risk factors, teach women the importance of self-breast examination, and encourage youth involvement in health advocacy. “The sensitization sessions were highly interactive, allowing participants to ask questions and clarify misconceptions about breast cancer,” he said.

Mr Jallow added that the screening provided both a diagnostic service and an opportunity for personalized health education, empowering women to actively monitor their breast health. He noted that the exercise underscored the importance of regular screening, particularly among young women who may underestimate their risk.

Acknowledging support from various institutions, Mr Jallow expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Health and Gender, EFSTH, the Department of Surgery, and the National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) for their professional guidance and logistical support. He also thanked sponsors Africmed and Carmou Global Properties for their generous contributions and commitment to advancing community health.

The event symbolized unity in the fight against breast cancer, combining community engagement, health education, and medical support to promote early detection and better health outcomes.
