The Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre (SDKJ-ICC), managed by Banjul International Convention Centre Ltd (BICC), has clarified reports of a purported LGBTQ+ event allegedly held at the Centre on Wednesday, 22 October 2025. The clarification follows widespread social media posts showing roll-up banners at the venue.
In a press release on Thursday, 23 October 2025, BICC stated that the banners were displayed by a group called the Pan Africa ILGA. However, investigations revealed that ILGA was neither accredited by the ongoing 85th Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) nor registered with SDKJ-ICC for any official meeting or event. As such, no formal event took place at the Centre.
“Upon discovery, the Management took immediate action to remove all unauthorized banners and promotional items,” the statement said.
BICC emphasized its commitment to upholding the laws of The Gambia and clarified that the Centre does not permit activities that contravene national legislation.
The clarification comes after public attention surged following the social media circulation of the banners, prompting swift action from the Centre’s management to prevent misunderstandings.
SDKJ-ICC continues to serve as a venue for official and legally recognized events, including international conferences, workshops, and governmental meetings. Management assured the public that all activities hosted at the Centre are closely monitored and comply with the law.
