The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has announced the suspension and detention of four junior police officers who are suspected of involvement in Omar Badjie’s death in Mandinaring pending coroner’s inquest.
The GPF made this confirmation in a statement on Thursday. It could be recalled that Omar Badjie allegedly died from police brutality last week Friday when he was arrested by the police routine patrol team. The police initially reported that he collapsed during the raid and was pronounced death on arrival at the hospital. However, this statement from the police was disputed by the community of Mandinaring, accusing the police of torturing Omar Badjie to death. This issue resulted in violent protests by the youth of the community, several arrests were made and clashes with riot police were reported.
The GPF revealed that four officers directly involved in the pursuit of the late Omar Badjie were arrested on 28th September 2025 and remain in detention, pending the institution of an independent Coroner’s Inquest by the State.
“The officers are: 1st Class Constable 8625 Sulayman Jarju of Jamburr, Police Constable 9245 Mamadi Jallow of Kubariko, Police Constable 9440 Ebrima Touray of Lamin, and Police Constable 10000 Fa Sainey Cham of Banjulinding,” the police announced.
The Gambia Police Force further stated that postmortem examination was conducted by a pathologist in the presence of stakeholders to determine the cause of death, after which the body was released to the family for burial on 1st October 2025.
The police reaffirm their commitment to a transparent and impartial investigation and assure the public that justice would be diligently pursued, and anyone found wanting will face the full force of the law.
