A man from Fass in the North Bank Region of The Gambia has undergone lifesaving surgery after a story published by The Fatu Network drew international support.
Salif Buwaro had lived in pain for months with a severe scalp infection that left him unable to work or care for his family. What began as a small, untreated wound developed into a life-threatening condition.
“I went through sleepless nights and discrimination when the illness was at its peak,” Buwaro said. “I am indeed very grateful for another opportunity to live, to enjoy sound sleep, and catch up with my family and friends. Today I thank the Almighty Allah.”
Health experts warn that untreated scalp infections can expose deeper tissue and, if neglected, may spread to the skull or brain. In Buwaro’s case, poor access to healthcare and delayed treatment allowed the infection to reach an advanced stage.
Two weeks after his story was published, Spanish medical charity Cultivant Vida, which operates in The Gambia, offered to help. On 15 September, Buwaro underwent surgery.
“The issue that inspired me was the urgency,” said Lamin I. Darboe, coordinator of Cultivant Vida. “After seeing his story, I knew that a late response could have cost his life. Such surgery is impossible with our locally based doctors. Overseeing treatment abroad is very expensive, which is why many vulnerable Gambians die from treatable conditions. I feel proud to have helped save a life so Salif can return to his family, contribute to society, and support national development.”
Darboe personally oversaw the procedure and urged the government to prioritise accessible health insurance for Gambians unable to afford overseas treatment.
Buwaro, once resigned to death, now speaks with renewed hope.
“My encounter with The Fatu Network turned my life around. I would like to express my gratitude to the network, to Mr Darboe, and to everyone who stood by me. I never thought such help would come my way, as I had long searched for it.”
His friend, Ebrima Corr, said: “I am very happy to see my friend eating well, sleeping well, and socialising again. It was impossible before, but now he has a new outlook. My heart is full of joy, and I thank The Fatu Network for the intervention. I pray for your continued growth.”
