The General Transport Union (GTU) of The Gambia has identified nine key challenges affecting the country’s road transport sector.
These issues were presented during a town hall meeting held over the weekend at the Samega Janneh Hall. The gathering served as a platform for Union members to openly engage and discuss pressing concerns within the transport industry.
According to the Union, members raised several critical issues impacting their daily operations, which were thoroughly deliberated during the meeting.
Among the major concerns were the high cost of fuel, recent increases in national transport fares, and the establishment of standardized fines for various infractions.
Discussions also focused on operational challenges posed by foreign commercial vehicles, the poor maintenance of road shoulders and signage, and the lack of sufficient commercial garages nationwide.
Additionally, the GTU expressed concern over the unregulated operations of “Tok Tok” tricycles, a shortage of sand quarries vital for construction and road works, and the need for better coordination and management of garages in the Greater Banjul Area.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of resolutions aimed at addressing these issues. The Union pledged to formally submit the recommendations to relevant authorities and stakeholders for urgent consideration and appropriate action.
The GTU reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of transport workers and advancing a safe, affordable, and efficient transport system for the benefit of all Gambians.
