Super Falcons begin WAFCON campaign with 3-0 thrashing of Tunisia

Nigeria’s Super Falcons kicked off their campaign for a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with a commanding 3–0 win over Tunisia in their Group B opener on Sunday.

Goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chiwendu Ihezuo powered the Falcons to their first-ever WAFCON win over Tunisia, marking a strong start to the tournament.

It took just four minutes for Nigeria to break the deadlock, as Oshoala nodded in a low, curling free-kick delivered by Babajide from the left flank.

Babajide then got on the scoresheet herself in first-half stoppage time, weaving her way into the box before firing a low shot past the Tunisian goalkeeper. The strike marked her first goal at a senior international competition.

Shortly before the break, Ashleigh Plumptre appeared to have made it 3–0 with a powerful header from a corner, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper.

Nigeria maintained their dominance in the second half, creating numerous chances but struggling with finishing in the final third.

Tunisia briefly threatened in the 75th minute, appealing for a penalty, but after a VAR review, the decision was overturned.

In the 84th minute, substitute Ihezuo sealed the win with a well-taken volley inside the box, finishing off a knockdown header from Okoronkwo after a pinpoint cross from Plumptre.

The victory sends the nine-time champions to the top of Group B, ahead of the day’s later clash between Algeria and Botswana.

Next up, the Super Falcons will meet Botswana at the Stade Larbi Zaouli on Thursday, while Tunisia will face off against fellow North Africans Algeria.
