The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy has today officially validated the National Data Policy 2025, a major milestone in The Gambia’s digital transformation journey.
This policy reflects the country’s strong commitment to unlocking the transformative value of data for national development and aligns with the African Union Data Policy Framework.
This policy aims to ensure proper data management, foster trusted data exchange, encourage public and private data value creation and innovation, thereby establish an enabling framework for human-centric, rights preserving and secure data governance environment that create a sustainable data economy in the Gambia.
Hon. Minister Lamin Jabbi emphasis that “data is no longer just information , it is a strategic asset, a new form of capital crucial for innovation, good governance, business growth, and social development.”
The Hon. Minister of Information Media and Broadcasting Dr. Ismaila Ceesay also praised the broad consultative process and commended the Ministry’s visionary leadership in bringing this initiative to life.
This policy development is supported by the African Union Commission , through a technical assistance to The Gambia as part of the broader AU-EU intercontinental data initiative.
Additionally, the German Development Agency (GIZ), AUDA, NEPAD and RIA provided counter support to the development of this National Data Policy.
The National Data Policy provides a strategic road-map for institutional reforms, legal frameworks, and capacity-building efforts needed to harness data for The Gambia’s development goals.
