The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, has revealed that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has submitted a single-term presidency proposal to the emerging opposition coalition as part of his vision for national transformation.
Tanko made the disclosure on Tuesday during a ceremony in Pantami, Gombe State, where Obi was conferred with the traditional title of Sarki Maskan (War Hero). A separate letter of commendation, recognising his service to the Pantami community, was also presented. In a parallel recognition, Obi’s former media aide received the title Dan Maje Babba Pantanmi.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Tanko expressed confidence that the proposal, which outlines a four-year single tenure for Obi if elected in 2027, would gain traction among key opposition stakeholders. He confirmed the proposal has been submitted to the coalition of opposition leaders, which includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
“We have presented it to the coalition. It is there for them to make a decision. But we are confident it can work,” Tanko said. “This is a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Peter Obi embodies that. What Nigeria needs now are leaders with integrity.”

According to Tanko, the proposal stems from Obi’s belief that a focused, transparent administration can deliver significant reforms within four years. “Even though the single term is not in the constitution, Obi has committed himself to serve only one tenure. He believes four years is more than enough to stabilise key sectors like electricity, revive the economy, and reposition Nigeria as an exporting nation,” he added.
Tanko also addressed Obi’s decision to accept the chieftaincy title, an unusual move for the former Anambra governor who is known for rejecting such honours. He noted that the gesture from Pantami holds symbolic value, as it represents recognition from a northern community for an Igbo leader.
“Obi is not a man who chases titles. But this one is special. It speaks volumes about his growing national acceptance, especially in the North where his 2023 support base was relatively weaker,” Tanko explained.
He attributed Obi’s rising popularity in northern Nigeria to his humanitarian interventions, including the provision of boreholes in rural communities, support for Almajiri schools, and aid to youth entrepreneurship initiatives. “Locals now say, ‘Go fetch me water from Peter Obi’s borehole.’ That tells you something has changed,” he said.
Tanko described the recognition as a “testament to the bridge-building legacy” of Peter Obi and an indicator of shifting political allegiances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The grassroots support is growing. The people are beginning to see that Peter Obi is not just a candidate from the East but a Nigerian leader with a national outlook and a plan for all,” he concluded.
