Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged members of the National Assembly to remain focused on their legislative responsibilities and disregard critics who label them as a rubber stamp institution.
Speaking on Thursday during a joint session of the National Assembly held in honour of President Bola Tinubu at the National Assembly Complex, Akpabio defended the integrity of the federal legislature, insisting that its role is often misunderstood by detractors.
“We should ignore the critics who tag us rubber stamp. They don’t know why we are here,” he said, in a pointed rebuke of those questioning the independence of the legislature.
Akpabio used the platform to commend President Tinubu for what he described as notable achievements in his first two years in office. He highlighted the administration’s efforts in stabilising the country and advancing democratic values.

In a bid to further honour Nigeria’s democratic journey, the Senate President also appealed to President Tinubu to consider establishing a June 12 museum. According to him, such an institution would serve as a historical archive for the efforts and sacrifices of pro-democracy activists—many of whom, he noted, gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom.
He said the museum would be a symbolic tribute to Nigeria’s democratic evolution and a tool for preserving the legacy of those who fought for the nation’s civil liberties.
