Presidential hopeful and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has clarified his continued allegiance to the Labour Party (LP), despite his recent involvement in a coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Obi maintained that his participation in the opposition coalition should not be interpreted as anti-party activity.
According to him, the alliance is a strategic move toward achieving better governance and does not compromise his membership of the LP.
“Today, I am a Labour Party member. I remain in the Labour Party. But we have all agreed to work as a coalition for the 2027 election, and for that, we’ve adopted ADC. Going on, other parties and individuals will also come in,” he said.
Obi stressed that the coalition’s objective is to unify like-minded political actors and parties in the interest of the nation.
“We want better governance for this country. We want to see a more competent government with capacity and character,” he added.
The former LP presidential candidate also noted that similar coalitions in the past had resulted in name changes and broader alliances. He assured supporters that his collaboration with other political parties is future-oriented and does not breach the current framework of his party loyalty.
“No, there is no anti-party. Remember, we said for 2027. We are not in 2027; we are in 2025. It’s clear. We’ve adopted it for 2027,” he emphasized. “If I say I am going to be part of your dinner in the evening, that doesn’t mean I should abandon my breakfast and lunch.”
Obi’s remarks come amid growing speculation over political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition parties intensify efforts to challenge the dominance of the APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
